106–112 Hardware St, Melbourne - ph: (03) 9602 2111

Just visited Nieuw Amsterdam for the first time for dinner. I was looking for something  a bit different for our anniversary celebration this year and liked the idea of a restaurant/ cocktail bar.

Nieuw Amsterdam is spread across two levels - a basement cocktail bar and a bright open space dining area on the first level.

We headed downstairs first for a couple of drinks. Not too crowded - it was easy to find a spot to sit down and the bartender was super knowledgeable on the drinks menu.

Nieuw Amsterdam's 'Modern American' food menu is small and combines influences from various cuisines.

Moving to the restaurant, we started on the chicken waffles - an amazingly smooth dollop of chicken liver pate over a fine layer of chicken terrine and topped with crispy chicken skin and orange caramel.

This entree was amazing. The flavours worked really well together and I loved the subtle sweetness that the waffles and orange reduction added to the chicken. Too bad it was such a tiny serve...

Chicken waffles $14

Hubby being the good burger & chips lover that he is didn't have to look at the menu twice before settling for the cheeseburger and thick Dutch fries.

I loved the spicy mayo served with the chips, but the fries were a bit overcooked. Hubby liked his burger - especially the sweet brioche bun - but just thought it was a bit too small, specially for a main dish.

Dutch potato fries, sriracha mayo $8

The star of the nigh ended up being my unexpected-American-diner-menu-item ramen. The super fine and soft house made ramen noodles were served with crispy ham hock, miso broth, seaweed, spring onions and a perfectly soft boiled egg.

Flavoursome broth coupled with amazingly tender and moist chicken breast. This dish for a change was a very generous serve and enough for me to share with my still hungry hubby.

Chicken ramen $21

Having the time to sit down, relax and talk about life with the hubby is a rare occasion these days. Dinner at Nieuw Amsterdam was a good night out.
