THE LAST JAR

616 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne - ph: (03) 9348 2957

Traditional Irish pub with a twist. That's how I described it after hubby asked me to sum up our dinner.

He found it by chance searching for a new place to try and I was sold when I checked on their website that, 'following the tradition of an Irish farmhouse, we make as much of the food as possible, in-house – hand-churned butter, freshly baked breads, sausages, puddings, bacon, all are handmade in-house'.

The vibe at The Last Jar is pretty casual. The crowd at the dining room was older, the pub was a bit more boisterous, and they both serve the same menu (plus some sandwiches available at the bar).

It's a pretty authentic fare; all the staff at the dining room were Irish and the menu covers many traditional dishes.

Crumbed garlic mushrooms ($9) and battered sausage ($6)

We chose a few entrees to share and everything was amazing. I'm not a huge fan of deep fried, but I still loved both the mushrooms and the sausage. The dough was really light and crispy on both and they didn't feel heavy at all.

I also tried the special of the day cured king fish with pickled cucumber and crispy beetroot. It was a delicious combination of zesty flavours that matched the oil in the fish really well. Beauty!

I chose the kale and bacon soup for main for something lighter after trying so many entrees. AND... I wanted to try The Last Jar's house cured bacon :)

Loved, loved, loved it! I'm a big fan of kale, so I'm biased. But this soup was so creamy, salty and tasty with the bacon - perfection.

Hubby really enjoyed the combination of flavours in the pork belly, but he missed the crispy texture.

We were so full after so much food, but we just couldn't resist trying their Guinness icecream. The combination of chocolate, beer and honeycomb was oh-so-good-amazing-tasty! And I don't even drink beer.

We had a great night at The Last Jar - highly recommended.
