BEST BAKERIES IN MELBOURNE - My top 5 favourite places

B R E A D

There is nothing like the smell of fresh bread and the taste of warm bread with a dash of butter.

Good sourdough bread is an artform. It takes lots of time and effort to make, and you can definitely taste the difference between artisan and commercial bread.

Best sourdough bakeries in Melbourne

I'm a bread aficionado and people always ask where I get my loaves from. Here is shortlist of my favourite (it was hard to choose!) bakeries in and around Melbourne.

MELBOURNE CBD and INNER NORTH

Rustica sourdough
402 Brunswick St, Fitzroy
33 Guilford Lane, Melbourne

Rustica Sourdough is the original bakery and Rustica Canteen is the sister cafe.

Bread and pastries here are fantastic. The quinoa and linseed loaf is my favourite. The bakery looks great and the Canteen in the city is always packed.

Amongst themselves, the owners' previous experience includes Ladro, Touchwood, Coin Laundry, Tall Timber and The Marquis of Lawn.

In a nutshell - Cafe pedigree at its best

INNER EAST

Pure Bread
114 Union Rd, Surrey Hills

Pure Bread Bakery is pretty low key and mainly visited by locals. Although they have a coffee machine, it's not really the place you'd sit down for a cup.

Pure Bread Bakery's sourdough is light and fluffy, has a crispy crust and no big air holes.

In a nutshell - oldschool goodness

INNER SOUTH and INNER EAST

Woodfrog Bakery
108 Barkly St, St Kilda
459 Toorak Road, Toorak
Rear of 141 High Street, Kew

I have blogged/ Instagrammed this place A LOT. Woodfrog Bakery's fruit loaf (loaded with Christmas pudding-like spices) and honey & oat loaf are my favourites and a staple at my place. The bagels are also worth a try.

In a nutshell - My favourite of all times bread in the world

INNER WEST

Cobb Lane Bakery
13 Anderson St, Yarraville

Originally from the UK, Matt Forbes has worked at world-renowned restaurants like Le Manoir Aux Quat' Saisons, The Waterside Inn and Noma, before opening Cobb Lane Bakery in Yarraville.

Cobb Lane Bakery is also a very cosy cafe and we've visited a couple of times for brunch. They bake a selection of doughnuts, Danish pastries, desserts and of course, they own bread.

In a nutshell - for the lovers of bread with a sweet tooth

Best sourdough bakeries in Melbourne
Candied Bakery
81A Hudsons Rd, Spotswood

The founders of former much-loved Sugardough bakery in East Brunswick are back in business with Candied Bakery, a Willy Wonka-like dream of  colourful sweet delights.

Candied Bakery brings together the traditional Aussie pie, New York's Momofuku Milk Bar inspired sweets and the beautiful sourdough bread we grew used to at Sugardough.

In a nutshell - American milk bar meet Aussie bakery
